Before my husband Jimmy and I met, I had made a long list of what I desired in a husband. I presented this list to God in prayer. When I met Jimmy, and as our relationship began to grow, I realized he was everything on my list and more! God had answered my prayer and had given me above and beyond what I had asked for in a husband.
There is a verse in the Bible (Ephesians 3:20) that says,
“Now to Him who is able to do EXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY above all that we ask or think…”
God did “exceeding abundantly” when He brought Jimmy into my life. It was because of this verse that we chose March 20th (320) as our wedding day.
As time passed, we would see God do more amazing things in our lives. We would call these our “320 Moments” – and there were a lot of them! From providing for our needs in extraordinary ways after Jimmy lost his job, to healing relationships we thought would never be healed. 320 became our motto for our marriage and for our life – and for this ministry.
Within five months into our marriage, our church was approached by a local senior center requesting a church service be held in their facility. In the beginning, Jimmy and I volunteered to lead worship. Two weeks later, our associate pastor asked Jimmy to take the role as the teaching pastor. From that point on, our ministry to the elderly began and we never looked back. We fell in love with the residents and with the ministry. It was more than just church to us! We celebrated with them during the holidays. We participated in their outings. We attended dinners and other special events, and ultimately, they became our extended family.
In 2014, just six years after we started leading this ministry, it had been on our hearts to start our own nonprofit corporation (320 Ministries International) with its mission and purpose to get others involved in serving the elderly through similar senior home ministries. Before our official launch though, God called Jimmy home. Only months before, he had just finished writing a book titled “Bringing Church to the Elderly”, and we were finishing a CD of HYMNS specifically geared to the older generation – both to be given out as resources in ministering to the elderly.
It has now become my focus and desire to continue what we started, putting into motion a ministry that I pray will touch the lives and hearts of this oftentimes “forgotten generation”. My prayer is that God will continue to do “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” to reach the elderly with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
